Coastside Catholic Worker
Coastside Catholic Worker
The Coastside Catholic Worker, based out of Magdalene House in
Half Moon Bay, was founded in the year 2000 by Mike and Kathy
Niece. Our ministry is based in the Catholic Worker tradition and
has grown to include many faith traditions reaching out to help those
in need on the Coast, south of San Francisco. We ground our work
in a firm belief in the God-given dignity of every person and we take
seriously the Gospel mandate in Christian scripture to practice the
Works of Mercy.
We are not a charity in the traditional sense and the ministry is not
just about giving handouts. It is about walking with our brothers and
sisters in need, trying to live lives of "active love" and taking
personal responsibility in addressing struggles in life. The focus is
on building relationships, both with those who are served and with
those who join in partnership with us to help those in need.
About Our Ministry
In March 2000, Magdalene House opened its doors to a family of
eight. Since that time, more than a dozen families or individuals in
need have received live-in hospitality and support as they work,
save money and transition into more permanent housing.
Responding to the needs of the community, we also distribute
food, clothes, diapers, blankets and miscellaneous household items
from our garage a couple days a week. Fresh produce is also
distributed one Saturday a month.
In the fall, many people join with us to gather and distribute
backpacks and school supplies to students from low-income
households. The holiday gift giveaway in December is a similar
joint venture.
The primary ministry of the Coastside Catholic Worker, which
includes advocacy in the community, is to the agricultural workers
and their families who work in the local nurseries, in the fields and
on the ranches.
